Ike bites

I went down to my old hometown a week or so after the storm. I grew up in a small waterfront community called Bayou Vista. I remember when Hurricane Alicia blew in ( we had evacuated of course) and some of the aftermath. Of course, at that time my parents made me stay with my sister in Houston, while they cleaned everything up and salvaged what they could from our flooded first floor. We had mostly just used it as a game room and my dad's tool shed. Houses built after 1976 were not allowed to have insurance coverage on the first floor, so it was minimalist. I think we got something like 7 foot of water though which after seeing what Ike did, I can only imagine what a mess my parents had to clean up. I am now glad they moved. I have been back three times since the storm and I think the island is going to come back to life soon. It is just sad though, because in the current economic climate, I know I would not like to be starting from scratch again.
